The BEST First Step After Weight Loss Surgery – LAWLS

There are a lot of steps you will take after weight loss surgery, but I am here to tell you that the best first step you can take just may make all the rest of them that much easier. It was recommended throughout my 7 months preparing for this life-saving event, and I am very pleased to tell you that after having taken that first step, the rest has been fairly easy to navigate.

So far. I’m sure there will be some bumps in the road, but I am dedicated to my success (as well as yours) and see it all as a learning experience.

So. What’s the best first step you can take after weight loss surgery?

A step. And then another. And then some more. Just step. Walk. Get out there and give your best shot. Doesn’t even matter right now where you walk, just get to stepping.

They (the awesome folks at the weight and wellness program here in Maine) told us that it would be in our best interest to walk immediately following our WLS. This helps with gas pains (they have to fill your stomach with air to perform the surgery properly) and is beneficial to your overall recovery.

Now. I’m sure my case isn’t more special than anyone else’s. But I stepped. I took that BEST first step not long after I woke up and I’ve been stepping ever since. I walked 2.5 miles before I was even discharged. In fact, the surgeon had to hunt me down to discharge me because I was running circles (squares, actually 🙂 ) around the hospital floor. It felt so good to walk and eased the pain so well that I am very grateful for this best first step.

I know not everyone will be able to run a marathon right out of the gate, but you will be thankful for less pain and a good start – with your best first step – to the rest of your new, healthy life.

I am working my way back up to 6 miles daily and have averaged 4 miles per day, just about every day, since I left the hospital. It is SO EMPOWERING to know that you are in control of the rest of your life in regard to your health.
